The snow is melting,

birds are singing

and

Lucille's creative sap is flowing.

The sunny days and warm breezes have her reaching for the spring palette....

Vibrant colours and expressive lines

are being put down

on the canvasses, boards and paper...

Being an avid gardener ...

she is itching to get her hands dirty in the soil,

but

for the meantime

she'll mix up the paint

and

spread it on the canvas to create a floral impression.

The artist will have a reception on Mother's Day, Sunday May 8th from 1-4 pm.

New 2011 Gallery Commission and Rental Rates

The Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre (“WMVAC”) is a not-for-profit organization. In 2010, the WMVAC embarked on a strategic plan with a vision of becoming a centre of excellence for the visual arts and a mission, among others, of creating and sustaining the visual arts community.

As one of the strategies to achieve its vision and mission, the WMVAC is implementing new gallery commission and rental rates for 2011 that will apply to all artists. The new rates (net of HST) for Guest and Outside Artists are as follows:

Commission rate for the sale of artwork in the gallery

Regular consignment sales - 40%

Group and exclusive gallery shows – 30%

Rental rates for group and exclusive shows in the gallery

Single artist for 2 weeks show- $150 per week

Single artist for > 2 weeks show - $125 per week

Two or more artists for 2 weeks show - $250 per week

Two or more artists for > 2 weeks show - $200 per week

These new rates will become effective March 1, 2011, and they will continue to be in effect until 30 day notice is given of any changes thereto by posting on the WMVAC’s website: www.williamsmill.com. The new rates will apply to all sales of artwork and all gallery shows, which occur after February 2011.

As a priority, the current policies for consignment sales and gallery shows, including the responsibilities and payment terms for both artists and the WMVAC Gallery are currently being reviewed and updated. These will be published on the WMVAC’s website very soon.

We are excited about what the future holds for the WMVAC and for all the talented artists we have the privilege of showcasing in our gallery and who form part of our community. We are working hard to achieve our vision of creating a centre of excellence for the visual arts, artists and education.

Founder of the Williams Mill recognized with prestigious Award

The Board of Directors of the Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre is pleased to congratulate Mary Lou and Doug Brock on their receipt of the Halton Hills Cultural Roundtable’s 2011 “Arts Alive Award for Culture*". This award recognizes their contribution in founding and developing the Williams Mill Visual Arts Center in historic buildings in the Glen Williams Hamlet within Halton Hills.

This Arts Alive award, which is presented only every five years, recognizes individuals who have displayed excellence in the field of cultural development within the Halton Hills community.

Mary Lou and Doug are now transitioning toward a well-deserved retirement from their involvement at the Williams Mill, and leaving the next phase of development to the Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre, a not for profit corporation.

Sonja and Candace have know each other for over 30 years. As Candace says about Sonja, 'This lovely lady and incredible artist was my Grade 8 homeroom Art Teacher. We reconnected five years ago after not seeing one another for 35 years.

William Mills Visual Arts Centre is pleased to have been chosen as a featured event in Doors Open Oakville 2010.

Doors Open Ontario is Ontario's part of the international Doors Open Movement involving over 40 countries. It is an event where the public gets to see the inside of heritage buildings, and involves the participation of some 50 Ontario communities during the summer / fall of 2010.

During the event, all the Mills Artists studio's will be open in addition heritage tours of the Williams Mill site will be available.

Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre's home in Glen Williams joins a long history of art and artists who found inspiration in and around this town located in Southern Ontario.

Toronto's auction house Joyner Waddington's recently sold Alfred Joseph. Casson's work 'Street In Glen Williams' for $542,000.00.

Canada's Group of Seven artist A.J. Casson's signed, oil on canvas with a highest ever pre-sale posted price of $200,000/250,000 sold for this record amount at the June 1st, 2010 auction.

Born in Toronto, the historical artist, and member of the Group Of Seven, A. J. Casson (1898-1992) grew up in Guelph and Hamilton.

He began his working career at the age of 21, in Toronto, where he joined other members of the Group of Seven, as a designer at the commercial art firm Rous & Mann.

Rous & Mann Limited were know for their high quality design and printing. Often their business cards portrayed modern, liberal open-minded images.

Casson focused his subject matter of painting of small communities in Southern Ontario, Parry Sound, Bancroft, Salem and Klienberg to name a few.
Until his death, in 1992, Casson remained an active and strong spokesperson for the Group of Seven and their achievements.

Evolution of 'Hidden Places'

“Hidden Places” at the Williams Mill features 4 Caledon based artists: Elizabeth Babyn, Abstract Landscapes; Merle Harstone, Abstract Acrylics; Marty Rothstein, Landscape Photography on canvas; and Anne Shabason Collage and Mystical Poetry. “Hidden Places is about the seen and unseen, places visited and dreamed of”.

Elizabeth, Merle, Anne and Marty met as part of a larger group of artists that have an annual tour, where visitors come to see artists at work in their studios. Over the past few years they developed a great friendship based on mutual regard and support for each other’s work. This grew into a desire to do a show together that was diverse but at the same time complementary or with a common theme. Our secret – we are both personally and professionally compatible. On the personal side we are like minded with the same values and we share a predisposition to action in a timely manner. On the professional side our work is diverse, but all of it is grounded in a love for visual impression; a passion for impactful presentation, a very strong statement for what each of us stands for and a desire to bring joy into the lives of our audience both tactilely and spiritually.

So what the visitors to the Mill will see is outstanding work, diverse to be sure, but with a synergy, that when shown all together is arresting and stimulating. “Hidden Places” sums up our theme, which is to explore visually different treatments, multi-media if you will, of places and things that ignite the imagination, but are comfortable and familiar at the same time. You’ll see! Come and enjoy.
